Himachal Travel Guide & Rules
Everything you need to know about mountain permits, high-altitude health, road safety, and editorial travel stories.
Permits & Inner Line Regulations
- Rohtang Pass Permit: Required for all non-HP tourist vehicles visiting Rohtang Pass (issued online by Kullu Tourism).
- Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required only for foreign nationals traveling between Khab and Sumdo on the Kinnaur-Spiti stretch (obtainable at Reckong Peo, Shimla, or Kaza).
- Green Tax / Municipal Toll: Minor entry cess charged at entry points of Manali, Shimla, and Kasauli.
High-Altitude Sickness (AMS) & Health
- Take the Shimla-Kinnaur route to Spiti to acclimatize gradually rather than rushing up from Manali.
- Drink 3 to 4 litres of water daily. Avoid alcohol and heavy strenuous exertion on Day 1 above 10,000 ft.
- Carry Diamox (after consulting your doctor), portable oxygen cans for Spiti, and basic first aid.
Mountain Driving & Road Etiquette
- Uphill vehicles always have the right of way on single-lane mountain roads.
- Never overtake on blind curves or sharp hairpin bends.
- Use lower gears (Engine braking) while descending steep mountain passes rather than continuous braking.
- Keep at least half a tank of fuel in high valleys (Kinnaur, Spiti, Pangi) as petrol pumps can be 100+ km apart.
